Sing Me Back Home

Driving home from work at 3 in the morning, I flipped around the music stations I have programmed on my truck radio and came across the old classic "Coat of Many Colours" by Dolly Parton. I was surprised to find this on the radio, but hearing it brought back memories...open spaces...summer...the farm...lunchtime...open screen door...Mom in the kitchen singing along to Dolly...tomato and avacodo sandwiches...funny, who knew then that ten years old in the country would be the best I'd ever do...

Oddly enough, considering I haven't listened to the CD in awhile, the Billy Ray Cyrus rendition of the great Haggard tune "Sing Me Back Home" has been going around my head for some unknown reason the last couple nights too...wonder what's up with that...

Well, the warden led a prisoner
Down the hallway to his doom
And I stood up to say goodbye like all the rest
And I heard him tell the warden
Just before he reached my cell
Let my guitar friend play my last request

He said sing me back home
With a song I used to hear
Make my old memories come alive
Take me away, and turn back the years
Sing me back home before I die

I recall last Sunday morning
A choir from off the street
Came in to sing a few old gospel songs
And I heard him tell the singers
There's a song my Mama sang
Could I hear it once before you move along
