"I'm Gonna Start Shakin' Things Up"

Brick. That’s the name of a new movie I can’t wait to see; coming to theatres March 24th. Here’s a synopsis:

Brendan Fry is a loner at his high school, someone who knows all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. When the girl he loves turns up dead, he plunges into the school's social strata like a fist through a honeycomb to find the "who" and "why," with the same single-minded devotion to his self-appointed task as the hard-boiled heroes of old.

Now, I love film noir, and in the rather cool trailer there’s a blurb from Roger Ebert saying “Noir to its very bones!” So that takes care of that. However, the premise is so cool it’s one of those “Man, I wish I had thought of that” moments. Take your typical noir, hard boiled, detective crime story; but set it in a modern high school with a sad-but-realistic drug culture environment and a young man – an outsider who knows more than he lets on – as the film’s protagonist. Now that’s a premise for a very interesting story. Plus, something that wins an award for a “special jury prize for originality of vision” at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, should be worth checking out.

There are 6 different one sheet movie posters for Brick, and pictured here is my favorite. The lines of dialogue in the trailer and the taglines on the posters are very cool and have a classic, almost Chandler-esque feel to them.

“Hard Luck in a Red Kimono.” To quote Madrox, it doesn’t get any more noir than this. (from the graphic novel Madrox: Multiple Choice).
