Jumping Ship

Belinda Stronach stuns political observers, moves to Liberals, joins cabinet - Yahoo! News

Wow, this must actually mean something in Canadian Politics if it makes headline staus on Yahoo.com, the US site. Rarely does anything from Canada make it onto the Yahoo front page headlines....so, I read it...

Hmph...interesting. Nothing like jumping ship right before an election. Guess she and everyone else knew who was going to win and she decided she wanted to be on that side. Still, this whole thing really, stinks...I mean, something's rotten in the state of Denmark, to coin a phrase...besides, that noise you just heard is a gold digger smashing through a glass ceiling...(thanks goodness no one reads this blog, or that would have just opened the floodgates of Flames :)

From a purely business standpoint, which is her background, it makes a great deal of sense. Align yourself with the strongest horse in the derby, so to speak. However, from a political viewpoint, what does it say for what you stand for? Your position on issues? If you simply jump to the winning team, does that mean you'll fight for the issues the people who voted for you expected you to solve? I think the answer's pretty obvious...

Oh well, it's the most interesting thing to happen in Canadian politics since Mulroney stepped down, handed the reigns to Campbell, and she deep sixed the party ;-)

Geez, when did politics become so serious :) ...I was just firin' potshots at easy targets, 'cause lets face it - the whole political thing is a joke...

And frankly, I still think its a power move. And the timing is suspicious at the very least. Besides, people may (benefit of the doubt) get into politics for the 'betterment of the people', but no one stays there for it. It's always about money and power, just like everything else. And sure, she may have money and power from somewhere else, but not in this arena yet, where she could influence a nation.

As for Campbell - of course she wasn't entirely responsible for the wipeout of her party, but how do you go from being the party in power to two seats in four months?

Oh, and there's a another Star Wars movie coming out? Wasn't one good one and four duds enough? (just kidding) - later

Great, my blog's only commenter is politically savvy...so much for the potshots :) Hell, I don't know what her motives are, or any other politician for that matter, but when it comes to politics I have a distinct mistrust and cynical view of them all. If she's really doing this in a last ditch effort to do something 'good', then so be it and good for her. However, she wasn't going anywhere with the conservatives, and if its true she was thinking of quitting, then a jump to the liberals was a no risk proposition for her and may just save the liberals butts this time around. Plus, she gets a posting out of it. Still looks like a climb up the ladder game maneuver to me. Hey, I hope it works out and that those in government could actually do something good instead of holding elections...

As for Star Wars, I've read articles that Lucas has stated this one does in fact have commentary on the current political bent, similar to the undertones the first one had on that political climate of the time. Either way, I'm sure it won't be as good as Sin City :) Now that was a good flick ;)
